No. 50

WASHINGTON, DC — We are deeply saddened by the passing of Representative Donald Payne Jr., (D- NJ), a true friend and advocate for the Greek American community. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate his enduring legacy and steadfast commitment to international justice and peace.

Throughout his career, Congressman Payne Jr. was a passionate supporter of the reunification of Cyprus, a cause close to his heart and inherited from his father, Congressman Donald M. Payne Sr. His advocacy was rooted in a firm belief in self-determination and democracy, principles he championed tirelessly. In his recent statements, he underscored the importance of a unified Cyprus and the role of the United States in supporting its independence from foreign interference. He emphasized the need for the U.S. to stand alongside its regional allies, Greece and Cyprus, to promote democracy and human rights.

Congressman Payne’s dedication to these ideals was clear when he spoke of the importance of a strong U.S. response to Turkey's deviation from democratic norms, advocating for actions to reinforce the commitment to liberty and justice in the region. His voice was not only influential but also inspirational, as he consistently pushed for policies that ensure stability and peace. On behalf of the entire AHI and AHIF board of directors, our deepest sympathies and condolences are with the Payne family. May His Memory Be Eternal!
